Exceptional discovery in the waters of San Leone
An exceptional discovery was made this morning in the waters of San Leone, in the area of ‘Babbaluciara’, where the port of ancient Akragas was once located. The recovery of an archaeological artifact has sparked considerable interest among archaeology enthusiasts and seems to offer new perspectives on the history of the ancient city.
Currently, the details of the discovery are being kept confidential, but reliable sources suggest that it is a significant find. It is believed that the find could be a pedimental ornamental element of the renowned Temple of Olympian Zeus or even the head of a horse, which was a distinctive feature in artistic representations of that era. The Temple of Olympian Zeus in Agrigento is unique among temples for its relief decorations. According to Diodorus Siculus, it featured scenes of the Gigantomachia to the east and the Trojan War to the west. A recent discovery of a fragment, now on display at the Archeological Museum, connecting a warrior’s torso and a magnificent helmeted head, confirms that the temple had marble ornamentation.
The Sea Superintendent, Ferdinando Maurici, stressed the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the discovery before drawing any definitive conclusions. At present, cleaning operations and detailed analyses are in progress.
As we eagerly await further revelations, the uncovering of this artifact stands as a testament to the meticulous work of archaeologists, the preservation efforts of institutions, and the enduring allure of unraveling the mysteries of our past. Stay tuned as we delve deeper into the history hidden beneath the waves of San Leone.
